Square plot with three-sided road
The square lot located in the land development district (Seoul Segok 2 public housing district) faced three roads. It was imagined that three-sided facade should greet and respond to pedestrians and vehicles in a uniform yet diverse manner. In order to protect the privacy of the ground floor while also ensuring a sense of openness, a long flower bed was created to mediate the interior and exterior. The north side where the building’s entrance is located has a neat expression with minimal windows and a similarly gently cut entrance door. The south side has a couple of square window with various sizes to secure sufficient lighting and open view.
Square exterior
Most houses have sloping roofs and their slopes are exposed according to the district unit plan. Since our buildable volume are close to a cube, elevation walls was extended so that the sloping roof was not exposed. The corners cut off along the road were made into a gap, so that a sunken space for the basement could be created on the south side and a stairwell and parking space could be secured on the north side. The gap was made of a different material (dark gray stucco) than the main material, red brick tile, so that the inside could be seen. The three-dimensional volume (cube) was expressed as it is, so that all sides could have a frontal view.
Square Plan
Due to planning one household per floor as a small multi-family house, we ended up with different floor plans. Under the height limit of the district unit plan, we divided the space into a space that could be solved without a beam with a wall structure to secure a high ceiling. However, the basement storage was designed to transfer the load of the upper floors to the outer wall line without an inner wall. As a result, the basement became a multipurpose space that could flexibly utilize the large space in various ways.
