This proposal for the Opera house in Busan, is based on unique program arrangement, which maximize the relationship between diverse programs as well as embracing the distinctive regional context inward and outward. The design aims to MAX-animate the site as a cultural hub with diverse range of functions and potentials, propelling Busan into the global cultural city.The project is intended to become an important landmark for the Busan, Korea. The key idea of design is a Disc (circular) building complex interlocked (plugged) with two major programs(the Opera house and Multi-purpose Theater), which connects different programs with captured courtyard. Also as the Disc in complete open site, this building orient 360 degree toward city center/ residential area/ harbor/ ocean/ especially various attractors.
The Disc is defined by the maximum buildable area of the site as a circle which is approximately 75m radial dimension (outer circle), and creating 100meter diametric captured courtyard. The volume of the Disc establishes an edge along the site, but by lifting up /twisting the edge, it clearly/ naturally creating a sweeping, open space every orientation, also gently inviting the public.
Disc’s undulated edge and glazing façade are an invitation to the people of Busan to enter and use the building. It contains the public areas (courtyard), Public Services, and the open ramped up observational roof deck. These areas are separated by way of differentiations in the soft/ hardscaping surface as well as furnishings/ Street furniture’s
The landscape is a highly flexible zone which is visible from the city/ harbor/ the ocean. Like Aquarium, the Disc is open to inward and outward, expose scenes of the performance, and the movement of people inside through layers of light and color, as well as capturing in the city/ocean sceneries into the site. ‘Performance’ begins to leak out of the enclosed spaces and into a dynamic urban courtyard of functions including café, restaurants, public exhibitions, and etc. Looping slab and Roof becomes a destination and a meeting point for the people of the city of Busan and beyond.
